The Statement by Embassy of Canada - Yangon Regarding Ongoing Civil War in Arakan

Embassy of Canada - Yangon
14 February 2020

Canada remains deeply concerned by the enduring conflict in Rakhine State, and its effect on civilians, especially women and children. The reported shelling of a school in Buthidaung on Myanmar's Children Day is a tragic example of the human cost of this conflict, which has now displaced tens of thousands since January of last year.

Canada calls on all parties to the conflict to cease hostilities, exercise restraint, address grievances through inclusive political dialogue, ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and comply with international humanitarian law. We also urge the Government of Myanmar to restore mobile internet access to all affected
townships in Rakhine and Chin States. We continue to urge the Government of Myanmar to allow unhindered and consistent humanitarian access to address the needs of vulnerable populations.
