Arakan Army allows rice into Myanmar’s Paletwa

The Arakan Army (AA) has given permission for 6000 sacks of rice to be delivered to Paletwa township in Chin State, which has been cut off for nearly a month by intense fighting with the Tatmadaw (military), a leader of a civic group said on Sunday.

U Kyaw Nyein, chair of the Khumi Affairs Coordination Council, said the rice shipment could arrive this week from the Rakhine State capital of Sittwe.
“They [The AA] will only allow rice to be delivered to Paletwa. Other things are not permitted,” he said. “The deliveries are only allowed for one day, and they gave non-governmental organisations one week to prepare.”
U Kyaw Nyein said the rice will be trucked from Sittwe to Kyauktaw township then taken by river ferry to Paletwa.
About six private boats will be needed to carry the rice in a single day, but they are having trouble finding enough ferries, as some do not want to make the journey due to security concerns, he said.
Khaing Thu Kha, AA spokesperson, said Tatmadaw trucks will not be allowed to transport the food. Neither will Tatmadaw troops be allowed to provide security for the rice shipment.
“We will fire at anyone who is accompanied by Myanmar government and military forces,” he said, adding, “We are in a state of war, and will fire at any police or military forces."
Khaing Thu Kha said that civilians who accompany the rice shipment must have a national registration card and a recommendation from a village administrator.
But U Soe Htet, Chin State municipal minister, warned that the AA may confiscate some of the rice because it is running out of food. "If we use the Sittwe-Kyauktaw-Paletwa route, there is no guarantee they will arrive in Paletwa," he said.
Brigadier General Zaw Min Tun of the Tatmadaw’s True News agency said he had no information about the rice shipment.
Comprised mostly of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, the AA is fighting for more autonomy from the central government. – Translated
