Over 700 houses burned in new Rakhine fighting

Over 700 houses were burned down in fighting between the Tatmadaw (military) and Arakan Army (AA) in Kyauktaw township in Rakhine State on Sunday, legislators and civic groups said.
U Tun Win, Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) MP for Kyauktaw, said, “We heard that about 700 houses in Tin Ma Gyi village caught fire,” he said. “There are only about 100 houses in Tin Ma Thit village. The villagers fled to Kyauktaw, and no one is in the village.”
Brigadier General Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson of the Tatmadaw’s True News agency, accused the AA of firing artillery at the two villages and blaming the attack on the Tatmadaw.
“The Arakan Army starts a fight near villages, and when fighting erupts, fires shells into the village and blames the Tatmadaw,” he said.
Khaing Thu Kha, a spokesman of the AA, said the fires were started by an air attack by the Tatmadaw.

As of March 16, 17 civilians had been killed, 66 injured, and over 10,000 people have fled their homes during clashes between the Tatmadaw and AA this year, U Tun Win said. Over 1000 houses have been lost to fires in Kyauktaw.
The fighting erupted in Rakhine in November 2018 and has since spread to Paletwa township in Chin State.
“There are only around 4000 people in Sami town, but over 2500 refugees arrived in the town last week after the fighting,” he said.
The AA, which was established in 2009 and is comprised mostly of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, is fighting for more autonomy from the central government. – Translated
